A Dream Life By Design Series
Most of us think our lives are shaped by big decisions.
In reality, they’re shaped by the systems we live inside every day — the expectations, roles, relationships, and routines that quietly determine how much space we have to be ourselves.
This series explores the support systems we rely on — at work, at home, and within ourselves — and how self-leadership allows us to redesign them with intention, not burnout.
Part 1: Your Work Support System
Beyond Busyness: Redefining Value, Time, and Sustainability
Many workplaces still confuse being busy with being valuable.
Availability becomes commitment.
Exhaustion becomes proof.
Time on the clock becomes a stand-in for contribution.
I know this world well.
After more than 35 years in corporate HR, I’ve sat on every side of the table — applicant, employee, manager, and leader. I helped build systems meant to support people. And I also normalized overwork — in myself and others — because it was what the culture rewarded.
For a long time, I believed that if I just worked harder, clarity and freedom would come later.
What I learned instead is this:
You cannot find alignment inside a system that only values your availability.
Your work support system is more than your job title or team.
It includes the metrics, the unspoken expectations, the pace, and the behaviors that are quietly rewarded.
When those elements are misaligned, even work you’re good at becomes draining.
Reflection questions:
Where is my value measured by visibility rather than impact?
What expectations exist that I never actually agreed to?
What part of my work truly matters — and what simply fills time?
Design begins with awareness.
Not everything needs to change — but everything needs to be seen.
